A winter storm caused accumulated mud to slide off mountain slopes in Orange County, damaging homes, cars and forcing people to evacuate.
A section of the road in Silverado Canyon was covered with a thick layer of semi-liquid mud. The authorities used heavy machinery to clear the road.
At least six vehicles were caught in the mud, according to a fire brigade spokesman.
The canyon is closed between Olive Drive and Ladd Canyon Road. Residents were sent to an evacuation center in the El Modena High School building.
