A bus carrying members of a choir was swept away while trying to drive through a full-flowing river in Kenya.
More than 23 people drowned as dozens of people aboard frantically tried to get out of the bus as it quickly plunged into murky water.
The yellow school bus had been hired to take the church choir to a wedding ceremony Saturday when it ran into a flooded road with rapidly flowing water.
The bus attempted to cross to the other side of the river, tipped over on its side, and began to sink quickly.
Within seconds, most of the bus was under water, with passengers and passersby screaming for help and people rushing to pull people out.
Ten passengers were rescued from the bus, but divers have already recovered the bodies of 23 drowning victims, and the death toll is expected to be even higher.
The incident occurred on the Enziu River, about 125 miles east of Kenya’s capital, Nairobi.
Charity Ngilu, governor of Kitui County, where the incident occurred, said: “We had this terrible, terrible accident that happened here Saturday morning.
More than 23 bodies have been recovered so far. We have more bodies on the bus.”
Deputy President William Ruto offered his condolences and also urged motorists to use extra caution on the roads as heavy rains are falling in many areas of Kenya.
