Thousands of homes damaged by flooding in northern Peru

Heavy rain has caused severe flooding in parts of northern Peru over the past few days.

ANDINA news agency reported that about 3,000 homes were flooded after a short period of heavy rain that caused flooding in the city of Yurimaguas, the capital of the province of Alto Amazonas in the Loreto region.

In the 24 hours before March 20, about 160 mm of precipitation was recorded in the city. According to media reports, most of it fell out in 3 hours.

Some areas of the city were found to be below 2 meters of water as a result of flooding, which affected 7 areas of the city, in particular around the Yurimaguas airport.

Heavy rain has also triggered flooding in parts of the San Martin region in recent days.

The country’s disaster relief authorities reported damage or destruction to about 20 homes in the province of Rioja, resulting in more than 30 people being evacuated between March 16-21, 2021.

Meanwhile, about 400 people have been affected by floods in Moyobamba province since March 21.
