Record rains cause flash floods in Tennessee, USA

Heavy rains in Tennessee flooded houses and roads, prompting officials to rescue dozens of people from homes, apartments and vehicles. Authorities said four people were found dead on Sunday following the flood.

During the night, the National Weather Service in Nashville declared extreme flooding for the city, as well as Brentwood, Franklin and Mount. Juliet.

“There is severe torrential flooding, many roads, interstate highways and homes are flooded with water, and rescue operations continue!” the agency tweeted. “Please stay home and don’t travel!”

The Nashville Fire Department said it rescued at least 130 people from cars, apartments and houses, and about 40 dogs were moved from Camp Bow Wow, Nashville’s kennel, to another location.

To the south, in Williamson County, there have been more than 34 rapid water rescue operations, EMA County Director Todd Horton said during a media briefing. They had to evacuate 18 houses from one block.

Nashville received 5.75 inches (14.6 centimeters) of rain on Saturday, setting a new record for rainfall in the city on a March day, according to the weather service. It was also the fourth wettest day in the history of the city. Almost another inch of rain fell after midnight.
