Flash floods hit Luanda, Angola
Heavy rains have triggered heavy flash floods in Luanda, Angola from Monday 15 March 2021. 1,770 people were injured and, according to the National Civil Protection and Fire Service, at least four people were killed and three others were missing.

Heavy downpours began on Monday, leading to flooding that affected central parts of the city and caused massive traffic disruptions. 554 homes were damaged in areas around the city, including Viana, Kakuako, Belas and Talatona.

About 100mm of rain fell 24 hours before Tuesday, March 17, but most of the total fell during the three-hour period on Monday.

At least four people were killed in the flood, and three others were missing, including two children. Among the victims was a street vendor who died from an electric shock, as confirmed by Faustino Migens, spokesman for the Luanda Civil Protection and Fire Service.


He added that the severe weather affected up to 1,770 people and 80 percent of the city.

Joana Lina, Governor of Luanda Province, said assessments would be underway and authorities were already gathering information about the situation.
