Lava flows and gas streams from Kilauea on satellite photo

New photos taken by NASA’s satellite offer a unique view of the continuing eruption of the Hawaiian volcano Kilauea, which on Thursday destroyed dozens of houses and forced 1.8 thousand residents to leave the area.
Two photographs in fake colors made by the instrument on board the Terra satellite show cracks along the Eastern rift zone of the volcano. From them follows lava and toxic gas sulfur oxide.
On the first photo (above) the faults are yellow, the vegetation is red, the old lava flows are black and gray.
In the second picture (below), long streams of sulfur oxide – a colorless but foul-smelling gas that can irritate the skin and mucous membranes – yellow and green stripes.
“These photos help scientists, authorities and the public get a complete picture of where the new lava flows and where toxic gases move,” says Kayla Iakivino, a volcanologist at the Arizona State University (USA).
Kilauea, located on the southeast side of the Big Island of Hawaii, is considered one of the most active volcanoes in the world.
The Terra satellite, which was launched in 1999, revolves around the Earth at an altitude of 700 km above the surface of the planet.
