The most ancient gold ornament in the Caucasus was discovered in Azerbaijan
The gold necklace, which is considered the oldest golden ornament in the Caucasus, was discovered during excavations in one of the most ancient parts of Azerbaijan – Nakhichevan.
The Nakhichevan Autonomous Republic is an exclave of the Republic of Azerbaijan, which, in accordance with the Constitution of Azerbaijan and its own constitution, is an autonomous state within the Azerbaijan Republic.
The artifact was found in an ancient settlement located in the Sharur region, where archaeologists from the Nakhchivan branch of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan and the French National Research Center conducted excavations.
A gold necklace is an artifact that will open a new chapter in the history of Caucasian archeology. The necklace was used as an ornament of the national costume of Nakhichevan and was created at the end of the Eneolithic era.
“Eneolith”, Copper Age, Copper-Stone Age, chalcolite – an era in the development of mankind, the transition period from the Neolithic (Stone Age) to the Bronze Age.
A white and yellow necklace is 6 mm in diameter and 18 centimeters in width. The necklace has six small holes, which further improves its appearance.
“This artwork is the oldest golden pearl in the Caucasus,” said the head of the Department of Fine and Decorative Arts, the Institute of Language and Literature of the Nakhichevan Branch of ANAS Fizz Guliyev.
The researcher added that the artifact means a new page in the history of Caucasian archeology, ethnography, arts and crafts, particularly in Azerbaijani jewelry and national clothing culture.
The necklace is part of a group of pendants with a hook-like end, characteristic of the ancient period.
The region of Nakhchivan is widely known for its cultural monuments, rock paintings and a huge number of artifacts discovered by archaeologists in fortresses and ancient settlements, as well as ancient burial mounds, which allows experts to talk about the identity and unique culture of this region dating back to the Stone Age.
