More than 36,000 narrow wooden plates found in Hunan province in central China are covered with 200,000 Chinese characters, which mention that Qin Shihuang ordered a global nationwide search for the mysterious elixir of immortality.
These plaques were found in an abandoned mine in the village of Lea, Lunshan province in western Hunan. Records span the period from 222 BC. until 208 BC. and describe various topics such as politics, military science, economics, jurisprudence, culture and medicine.
The calligraphic text mentions a village called “Duxian”, where “a wonderful potion has not yet been found, and therefore the search will continue.” Another place, “Langya”, now it is in the modern eastern province of Shandong, near the sea, as written in the text “found a wonderful plant harvested from a favorable local mountain.”
“These global searches of the elixir are immortal, they demanded highly effective management and strong executive authority to issue such a government decree in ancient times, when transport and communication facilities were undeveloped,” said Zhang Chunlong, a researcher at the Institute of Archeology.
Zhang, said that the Qin Dynasty, although it existed only 15 years, had a complex medical system and documentation, as well as a variety of treatments that have continued to be used for a very long time.
Zhou Qi, assistant researcher at the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences of China, said that people at that time knew different methods of treating traditional Chinese medicine, such as moxibustion, acupuncture and topical therapy.
Physicians were allowed to treat patients under government leadership, and treatment data should have been recorded in official documents. Patients were mostly of the highest class.
