Legends of Scandinavia: The cursed dwarf Fafnir and the magic ring Andvaranaut (1)
All who touched the magic ring of Andvaranaut were dying, but the dwarf Fafnir killed his father and stole the priceless ring that was cursed, but he was a greedy Scandinavian dwarf who wanted all the priceless treasures only for himself.
For some time he escaped from the inevitable punishment, but fate caught up with him in the end, and he was punished for his crime. The cursed dwarf Fafnir turned into a terrible Scandinavian dragon, guarding the stolen magic ring Andvaranaut and other golden treasures
The stories about Fafnir can be found in the Icelandic saga about Volgung. Like many other Norwegian myths, she describes the adventures of the gods, wonderful magical treasures and curious creatures, changing shape, possessing unusual abilities. In Norwegian mythology, dwarfs play a very important role, and these creatures can be good or evil.
Hreidmar, who was the king of the dwarves, had three sons. Fafnir was the eldest, and he was gifted with a fearless soul and a powerful hand. The second son, Otter could change his form, and then was Regin, who built a golden house to please his father.

The description of Fafnir is quite interesting. According to the Norwegian saga, no one dared approach Fafnir because of his cruel look and helmet. His terrible appearance was one of the reasons he guarded his father’s golden house.
Something terrible happened. Three gods Odin, Hönir and Loki walked along the creek to Midgard, one of the mysterious nine worlds of Yggdrasil, the sacred tree of life in Norwegian mythology.
The world of people is called Midgard (or Mannheim) and is located exactly under Asgard. It is surrounded by huge oceans, which are guarded by the Midgard Serpent, the evil, great sea serpent, Jormungand, another child of the god Loki.
The deceiver Loki killed the otter and threw it over his shoulder. What he did not know was that, being something of a magician, Othp often took the form of an otter during the day.
The three gods continued their journey until they came to the house of Hreidmar, whom they asked to hide for the night. At first Hreidmar was friendly enough, but when he saw the otter, he shouted with fury and sadness, because the dead creature was his son. Hreidmar called on two other sons, Regin and Fafnir. Then, with magical spells, he disarmed the gods and bound them.
In Norwegian mythology Andvaranaut, is a powerful magic ring capable of producing gold. It was created by the midget Andvari, who could turn into a fish at his discretion.

God One told Hreidmar that he and his companions would pay the ransom that he would ask for. Hreidmar and his sons demanded that the skin of the otter be filled with gold treasures. Loki, who was the most cunning of the gods, went straight to the place where he killed the otter and looked down into the water. Soon he saw what he was looking for, a huge pike guarding the entrance to the underwater cave, shimmering with gold. Pike was the midget of Andvari, the keeper of the legendary treasure – the magic ring of Andvaranaut.
To save his life, the midget Andvari refused all his gold. He begged Loki not to take the Ring of Andvaranaut, but Loki grabbed the ring and put it on his finger. Andvari imposed a terrible curse on the ring, swearing that anyone who wears it will be struck by illness and death.
Hreidmar and his sons were happy to receive so many gold treasures. The redemption of Otra was paid for, and three travelers were released, but very soon the curse of Andvari began to act.
Fafnir decided that he wanted all the treasures and did not want to share gold with his father and brother. So, he killed his father, and when Regin came to demand a share, he scornfully expelled him and offered him to earn his living.
Fafnir was now so greedy that he decided that he must guard his treasures day and night. The dwarf went into the desert to save his fortune, eventually becoming a dragon, and he breathed poison into the earth around so that no one approached him and his treasure, causing horror in the hearts of people.
But his brother Regin was determined to take revenge, and he sent his adopted son Sigurd to kill the dragon. So, the greedy fanfnirsky dwarf died, and the effectiveness of the curse was proven once again. It is better to stay away from the magic ring of Andvaranaut no matter how beautiful and priceless it is.
