That syllabus did not appear in a 2026 journal. It travels the way similar lists travel across Eastern and Northern Europe: copied from older herbals, television folk doctors, and family notebooks. Lithuanian physician and public commentator Filomena Taunytė is named in one liver-rinse recipe in the original sheet. The sheet is not a clinical protocol. It is a record of what people were told to eat and drink when the clinic was far, expensive, or not trusted.

Swiss-style reading means holding both sentences at once. The kitchen was not stupid. The lab was not a plot. Iron in nettle leaf is measurable. Hemoglobin after three weeks of wormwood vodka is not a published endpoint.

What the chemistry can support: Spinach carries non-heme iron and folate, but also oxalate that binds iron. Pairing it with vitamin C — raspberries, strawberries, gooseberries, blueberries — is the one folk habit that maps cleanly onto absorption research. Carrots are a beta-carotene food, not an iron food; they help vitamin A status, which matters for immunity and epithelial repair, not as a hemoglobin brick. Blueberries and wild strawberries are modest iron sources and useful vitamin C sources. Veal liver is the only item on that first line that supplies heme iron plus B12 and folate in dense form. Heme iron is absorbed at roughly 15–35 percent; plant iron at a much wider and usually lower range.

Motherwort (Leonurus cardiaca) is a heart-and-nerves herb in European folk use. Anemia evidence is thin. It is not an iron food.

What can be supported: Cornelian cherry is a vitamin C and polyphenol fruit. Vitamin C helps plant-iron absorption. Dandelion leaf and root show up in older European “spring blood” cures and contain some iron, potassium and bitter compounds that increase bile flow. Possible harm: Dandelion is in the daisy family. Allergy, bile-duct obstruction and lithium interactions are the standard cautions. Foraging next to roads adds lead and exhaust residue to a “spring cleanse.” Cornelian cherry is food-safe in ordinary amounts; the risk is delay, not the fruit.

Young nettle-top soup

Original method: a handful of fresh or dried young nettle tops per litre of boiling water, eaten as soup.

Claimed benefit: The classic Baltic and Slavic “blood soup.”

What can be supported: Stinging nettle (Urtica dioica) is one of the few wild greens whose iron numbers are repeatedly measured at a serious level — on the order of 3.5–4.2 mg per 100 g fresh leaf and far higher on a dry-weight basis — with vitamin C in the same leaf. A 2026 pharmacy-formulation paper treated nettle powder as a candidate iron carrier for that reason. Possible harm: Handle fresh nettles with gloves. People with kidney disease should not treat nettle as a free diuretic. Dried urban nettles can hold dust and heavy metals. Nettle can theoretically add to the effect of blood-pressure drugs and diabetes drugs. It does not cancel a bleed.

Carrots mashed in milk

Claimed benefit: Soft food for the weak and the anemic.

What can be supported: Calories, beta-carotene, and an easy texture. Milk calcium can slightly inhibit non-heme iron absorption if the rest of the plate is plant iron. As a comfort dish it is harmless for most people. As anemia therapy it is a side dish.

Possible harm: Low, unless the person is milk-intolerant or the recipe displaces actual iron food for weeks.

Fresh wild strawberries and strawberry-leaf tea

Original methods include eating the berries and, separately, 20 g of dried leaves and berries steeped in two glasses of boiling water for two hours, taken by the tablespoon three times a day.

Claimed benefit: Blood and spring strength.

What can be supported: Vitamin C, some iron, folate in the fruit. Leaf tea is a mild astringent drink with far less measured iron than the fruit.

Possible harm: Leaf tea is not standardized. Rosaceae allergy exists. Diuretic effect is mild. The larger harm is using leaf tea in a child who needed a ferritin test.

Regular boiled beetroot, and the mixed carrot-beet-radish juice

Original juice method: equal parts carrot, beet and radish juice, half a glass to one glass once or twice a day. Separate instruction: eat boiled beetroot regularly.

Claimed benefit: “Builds blood,” a claim that runs from borscht pots to juice bars.

What can be supported: Beetroot is a folate and nitrate vegetable with a modest iron content. Folate matters in megaloblastic anemia, which is not the same disease as iron-deficiency anemia. Possible harm: Beeturia (pink urine) frightens people who were not warned. Oxalate load matters for stone-formers. Commercial shots add sugar. Sea buckthorn berries; tea from leaves and young twigs

Claimed benefit: Northern vitamin fruit for weakness.

What can be supported: Sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides) is legitimately high in vitamin C and carotenoids. That helps plant-iron absorption and general recovery after illness. It is not heme iron.

Possible harm: Acidity bothers reflux. Leaf-and-twig tea is less studied than the berry oil. Harvest hygiene matters.

Blackcurrant berries and leaf tea

Original leaf method: 3–5 g dried blackcurrant leaf in a glass of boiling water, 10–20 minutes covered, half to one glass two or three times a day.

Claimed benefit: Blood and immunity.

What can be supported: Blackcurrant fruit is a vitamin C standout with some iron. Leaf tea is a traditional diuretic and flavoring drink. Composition favors the fruit over the leaf for anemia-adjacent nutrition.

Possible harm: Leaf teas can have a mild blood-pressure and diuretic effect. Currant leaves picked after pesticide spray are a bad idea. People on anticoagulants should not treat any “blood” herb as neutral without asking.

Rose hips, fresh and as a decoction

Two household versions sit on the sheet: eat the fresh fruit; or simmer two tablespoons of dried hips in two glasses of hot water for ten minutes, rest two to three hours, drink a quarter to half a glass three or four times a day. A later line repeats a lighter tea: two teaspoons of dried hips in a glass, boiled or thermos-steeped four to six hours, three times a day after meals, also offered for “metabolic trouble.”

Claimed benefit: The winter vitamin, and by extension the winter blood.

What can be supported: Rose hips are one of Europe’s strongest kitchen vitamin C sources. Vitamin C is the most defensible companion to plant iron on the entire list. That is absorption support, not a hemoglobin drug.

Possible harm: Seeds and hairs irritate the gut if the hips are not strained. Very high vitamin C doses loosen stools. People with hemochromatosis should not chase iron-absorption helpers.

Viburnum berries and rowan berries

Viburnum (Viburnum opulus, putinas) is simply “eat the berries.” Rowan (Sorbus aucuparia): two teaspoons of berries in two glasses of boiling water, stand one hour, sweeten, drink across the day.

Claimed benefit: Bitter-sour blood tonics of the northern hedge.

What can be supported: Both fruits carry vitamin C and polyphenols. Rowan berries are traditionally cooked or frosted before eating because raw fruit is harsh and, in quantity, can upset the gut. Neither fruit is a heme source.

Possible harm: Raw rowan in bulk. Viburnum bark and large folk doses have a separate toxicity conversation; the ripe berry in food amounts is the safer end of that plant. Identify the shrub. Red garden berries are not all food.

The teas and decoctions written as doses

Dried nettle infusion

Seven grams of chopped dried nettle herb in a glass of boiling water, covered 30 minutes, one tablespoon three times a day.

This is a smaller, medicinal-looking cousin of the soup. The iron story is the same. The volume is smaller, so the iron dose is smaller. Gastrointestinal comfort is usually better than ferrous sulfate. That is not the same as proving non-inferiority to 60 mg elemental iron.

Plantain-leaf tea, and plantain-leaf “breads” for children

Ten grams of chopped dried plantain leaves (Plantago major, gyslotis) in a glass of boiling water, 30 minutes, strain, one-third to one-half glass three or four times a day, 20 minutes before meals. Separately: children with anemia are told to eat little breads made from dried plantain herb ground to powder.

Claimed benefit: A child’s blood food that grows at the path’s edge.

What can be supported: Plantain leaf is a well-documented wound and mucous-membrane herb. Traditional Persian and European texts give it many jobs. A modern review of those uses does not put iron-deficiency anemia on the short list of confirmed effects. The leaf is not a dense iron food. The “bread” is a vehicle for a small herbal powder, not a heme source.

Possible harm: Plantain seed husk (psyllium) is a bulk fiber with its own dose rules; this recipe uses leaf, not husk, but families mix the two. Allergic reactions exist. Giving a child herbal biscuits instead of a pediatric workup is the real injury path, especially in a year when AAP screening rules were just rewritten.

Dandelion root and herb decoction

Six grams of chopped dried root and herb in a glass of water, boil ten minutes, rest 30 minutes, strain, one tablespoon three times a day before meals.

Same plant as the fresh juice, dried and boiled. Bitters may help appetite in a person who has stopped eating. Appetite is not hemoglobin. Bile-duct blockage and daisy-family allergy remain the stop signs.

Clover-blossom infusion, and clover spirit

Five grams of dried clover blossoms in a glass of boiling water, covered 30 minutes, one tablespoon three times a day. Later on the sheet: 50 g clover blossoms in 0.5 L vodka, stand ten days, one teaspoon with meals.

Claimed benefit: Soft blood herb; the spirit version as a stronger tonic.

What can be supported: Red clover is a phytoestrogen plant more often studied for menopausal symptoms than for anemia. Iron content of the blossom tea is not a clinical story.

Possible harm: Phytoestrogens in hormone-sensitive conditions. The vodka version adds ethanol. Bleeding risk is a theoretical caution when clover is stacked with anticoagulants. Pregnancy is the wrong time for improvisation.

Garlic: food, spirit, and the atherosclerosis pairing

The sheet calls garlic the best remedy for atherosclerosis and anemia. Two extract recipes sit beside the food advice.

First: peel and wash 300 g garlic, cover with 1 L of pure spirit, stand three weeks. Dose: one teaspoon three times a day into half a glass of milk. For people who “cannot eat garlic.”

Second, shorter: peeled washed garlic in a bottle, cover with spirit or vodka, strain after three weeks, 20 drops daily.

Claimed benefit: Circulation plus blood.

What can be supported: Culinary garlic and onion have a documented, lab-level effect on the bioaccessibility of iron and zinc from grains and some leafy vegetables. A 2010 grain study and a 2024 Moringa study both found higher bioaccessible iron when Allium spices were present, even when total iron in the dish fell slightly. A mouse study also found garlic can speed red-cell turnover — which is not the same as curing iron-deficiency anemia and, in excess, has been linked to hemolytic stress in animals. Possible harm: This is one of the sharper recipes on the sheet. A teaspoon of strong spirit extract three times a day is an alcohol habit, not a condiment. Milk does not cancel ethanol. Bleeding risk rises when garlic extracts meet anticoagulants or peri-operative care. Reflux and gastritis worsen. Pregnancy, childhood, driving, and liver disease are poor settings for spirit garlic. What can be supported: Cooked ruminant liver is the strongest ordinary food on this entire list for iron-deficiency anemia and for B12-deficiency anemia. That is not folk poetry. It is nutrient density. A 100 g portion of beef liver can supply on the order of 50–90 mcg B12 and several milligrams of highly absorbable iron, plus folate. Cooking does not wipe those numbers out.

Possible harm: Raw liver is the problem child. Bacterial contamination (Salmonella, Campylobacter, E. coli) is not a scare story. Parasitic risk, including reported links between raw cattle liver and human toxocariasis in eosinophilia workups, sits in the clinical literature. Preformed vitamin A toxicity is a dose-and-frequency problem even with cooked liver; daily large portions are how case reports of hypervitaminosis A get written. The “rinse” method tries to keep a liquid ritual while lowering the solid dose. It does not pasteurize the tissue. Juice mixed into a raw rinse does not make the rinse sterile. Cook the liver. Keep the juice if you want the vitamin C.

Wine, vodka, Cahors and the high-calorie pastes

Aloe, honey and Cahors

250 g aloe juice, 250 g honey, 250 g Cahors wine, rest four to five days at 4–8 °C, one teaspoon three times a day 30 minutes before meals, stored dark.

Claimed benefit: A restorative tonic for the weak.

What can be supported: Honey supplies energy and, if dark, a scatter of minerals. Aloe juice in internal use is a laxative-bitter, not an iron drug. Cahors is sweet red wine. The mix is calories plus ethanol plus a cathartic plant.

Possible harm: Inner-leaf aloe latex can cause cramping and, in chronic use, electrolyte loss. Wine is still wine. Children, pregnancy, and anyone with liver disease are the wrong audience. “Keep in the dark” is storage advice, not a safety certificate.

Walnut-septum Cahors

100 g walnut partition membranes in 0.5 L Cahors, stand two weeks, strain, two tablespoons three or four times a day before meals.

Walnut septa are a folk iodine-and-tannin material in Eastern Europe, more often waved at thyroid talk than at ferritin. The dose here is again a wine dose. Tannins can inhibit iron absorption — the opposite of what an anemia recipe wants.

Beetroot vodka

Finely grated beetroot in a jar, cover with vodka, dark cupboard 12 days, strain, 30 ml before meals.

Beet chemistry plus 40 percent spirit. The nitrate story does not require vodka. Thirty millilitres before meals is a drink.

May wormwood vodka, one drop

Fill a 3 L jar with young May wormwood herb, cover with vodka, three weeks in the dark, strain. Morning dose: one drop in a spoon of water before food. After three weeks, rest one week.

Claimed benefit: Bitter tonic for the depleted.

What can be supported: Wormwood (Artemisia absinthium) is a historic bitter and antiparasitic. Medieval texts did list anemia among its many jobs. Modern human evidence for hemoglobin is not there. Possible harm: This is the most toxic plant on the sheet if someone “improves” the dose. Thujone is a GABA-A antagonist. High exposure means seizures, restlessness, and, in rare published cases, liver injury after unsupervised concentrated use. Contraindications in the monograph line include pregnancy, breastfeeding, and, in practice, epilepsy and bile-duct obstruction. A one-drop ritual is an attempt at caution. Filling a three-litre jar with May tops and vodka is how concentration becomes unknown. Do not give this to children. Do not treat it as iron.

Pork fat, Antonovka apples, yolks, sugar, chocolate — spread on bread with hot milk

400 g unsalted pork fat, six large Antonovka apples chopped and mixed into the fat, melted slowly in the oven; 12 egg yolks beaten pale with a glass of sugar and 400 g good chocolate, folded into the melted fat-apple mass; spread on bread or a baguette three times a day, washed down with hot milk. The original promises that anemia “passes quickly,” well-being improves, and the recipe also suits people who need to gain weight.

Claimed benefit: Strength, weight, color in the face.

What can be supported: This is a high-calorie convalescent paste. Egg yolks carry some iron, choline and fat-soluble vitamins. Chocolate adds calories and a little copper. Fat and sugar add weight. For a wasted, under-eating adult after infection, calories can matter. For iron-deficiency anemia in a person who already eats enough, this is dessert with a medical alibi.

Possible harm: Saturated fat and sugar load in someone with diabetes, pancreatitis, or gallbladder disease. Raw or undercooked yolks if the method is sloppy. Food-safety of a room-temperature fat-chocolate spread. Children do not need this as a first anemia treatment. It will not find a bleeding colon.

Cocoa, home-rendered inner pork fat, honey and butter

Equal parts by weight — example 200 g each — of cocoa, home-rendered inner pork fat, honey and butter, melted together on low heat until fully fluid, cooled, stored dark and cool. Dose: one teaspoon dissolved in a glass of the hottest milk the person can stand, three or four times a day. Also offered for the “run-down.”

Same logic as the chocolate-apple paste: energy, not a targeted iron salt. Possible harm tracks the fat-and-sugar load and, again, the risk that a comforting drink postpones diagnosis.

Honey, goat milk, and the dried-fruit mash

The sheet prefers dark honey: 40–60 g, three or four times a day, better before meals, mixed with goat milk one-to-two. A separate mix: equal parts lemon, dried apricots, walnuts, raisins, dried plums and cranberries, chopped, barely covered with honey (200 g honey per litre of mix), two to three teaspoons a day.

Claimed benefit: Minerals in dark honey; a winter “blood paste” of dried fruit and nuts.

What can be supported: Darker honeys do carry more mineral ash than pale honeys; the absolute iron numbers are still small next to liver or a pharmaceutical tablet. Goat milk is food. Dried apricots and raisins are among the better kitchen plant-iron fruits; lemon and cranberry add acid and vitamin C; walnuts add calories and some minerals. As a snack that accompanies treatment, the mash is reasonable. As monotherapy for a hemoglobin of 8 g/dL, it is not.
