Matthew Whitaker, “a great friend of Hungary,” has been appointed by President-elect Trump as the U.S. ambassador to NATO.

Whitaker was in Budapest this past spring as a speaker at CPAC Hungary, noted PM Viktor Orbán’s political director, Balázs Orbán, on Facebook.

Trump called the former U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Ohio “a strong warrior and loyal Patriot, who will ensure the United States’ interests are advanced and defended” and “strengthen relationships with our NATO Allies, and stand firm in the face of threats to Peace and Stability. The announcement added, “He will put AMERICA FIRST.”

Meanwhile, Orbán’s political director also wrote: “Trump pledged that his candidate would ‘take decisive action against threats to peace and stability.’ It is good news for Hungary that the U.S. will finally be represented in NATO by an ambassador who wants to end the war. Matt will be an important partner in our struggle for peace.”

The Mandiner news portal called the appointment “good news,” entitling its piece on the announcement +Hungary can breathe a sigh of relief after Trump’s announcement: it will even affect the NATO relationship.”
