Significantly more residential burglaries in Germany

The number of residential burglaries has increased sharply in the past year.

Berlin - This emerges from the police crime statistics (PKS) for 2023, which Welt am Sonntag reports on. Accordingly, the number of “apartment burglaries” rose by 18.1 percent to 77,819 cases. Berlin is the front runner (8,323 cases, plus 35.2 percent) - that is the largest increase of all federal states. Hamburg, Bremen and Schleswig-Holstein are also well above the national average, each with an increase of more than 22 percent.

Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) wants to present the statistics next Tuesday together with the President of the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA), Holger Münch, and the Chairman of the Conference of Interior Ministers (IMK), Michael Stübgen (CDU), in Berlin. According to the PKS, around a third of all crimes registered in Germany (5.940 million) are theft offenses (1.971 million, plus 10.7 percent). The statistics also show strong increases in vehicle theft (29,985 cases, up 17.5 percent), shoplifting (426,096 cases, up 23.6 percent) and pickpocketing (109,314 cases, up eleven percent). ). A comparison of the 16 federal states shows that there is still a strong north-south divide in crime. In terms of the frequency of crimes per 100,000 inhabitants, Berlin is the most dangerous place to live (14,292 crimes).

This is followed by Bremen (14,170), Hamburg (12,380) and Saxony-Anhalt (8,863). Bavaria remains the safest (4,873).
