The first snowfall of the season brought up to 50 centimeters of snow to Turkey

Winter has officially arrived in Turkey as several cities across the country have received their first snowfall of the season. To the east, in Mush, where the snow cover reached 50 centimeters deep, several roads to populated areas were closed due to heavy overnight snowfall.

Slightly to the west, the first snowfall of the year fell in the Pülümür area of Tunceli: the city center and hills were covered in a blanket of white, with up to 15 centimeters of snow falling at higher elevations.

People stranded in nine cars on Van Bacchezaray Highway because of the snowfall were later rescued by crews from the municipality.

The vehicles were stuck on the Karabet Pass on the highway, which is 3,000 meters above sea level, after a heavy snowfall. Crews cleared the snow-covered road, allowing the stranded people to get to town.

The Regional Meteorological Office warned of ice and freezing temperatures that could occur in the region overnight and in the morning.

The highest temperatures in provincial centers are expected to be 5 degrees Celsius (41 degrees Fahrenheit) in Hakkari, 4 degrees Celsius in Mush and Van and 2 degrees Celsius in Bitlis.

In the north, in the Chamliemshin area of Rize, the snow cover was over 30 centimeters high in places. While it rained in downtown Rize, scattered snow flakes were observed in the Chamlihemshin area.

In addition to the snowstorm, cold and rainy weather continued to hang over the eastern part of the Black Sea region.
