Alaska: An explosive eruption occurred at Great Sitkin Volcano

On May 26, 2021, a brief explosive eruption began at Great Sitkin Volcano, Alaska, lasting about 1-2 minutes. The aviation color code was raised to red.

The resulting ash cloud rose up to 4.5 km above sea level and drifted eastward.

“After this explosion, seismicity has decreased, and satellite images show that the ash cloud has separated from the vent and is moving eastward,” the Alaska Volcano Observatory reported.

More explosions are possible, so the aviation color code remains red.
