Mysterious giant craters in Siberia: sinkholes or underground explosions?

Researchers are looking for the possible origin of the so-called “black holes” – massive craters that form on the Yamal Peninsula in northern Russia.

Giant circular craters appear to appear out of nowhere in remote areas of Western Siberia, frightening nomadic reindeer herders and scientists.

One such crater opened last year, and more than a dozen others took decades to form, according to the researchers. Some remain huge cavities, up to 30 meters deep. The rest become lakes.

An anthropologist who studies the culture of the local Nenets says that she witnessed the spontaneous formation of one such failure in the tundra.

“There was no lake, only larch. One night, after a loud explosion, the place looked like an inverted saucer with trees at the bottom and roots on the surface, ”she says, adding that a few days later a lake appeared on this site, which is now considered sacred to local residents.
