Heavy rains cause flooding in Brazil

At least one person died in flash floods in the state of Santa Catarina in southern Brazil. Meanwhile, flooding from a river in the northern state of Pará prompted authorities to declare a state of emergency.

On March 23, 2021, a storm brought strong winds and heavy rain to parts of the Santa Catarina state in southern Brazil. The greatest damage was inflicted in the city of Blumenau. The Civil Defense was involved in at least 20 incidents, including flooding and wind damage.

Flooding in the Norte Itupawa area collapsed a wall, killing one person and injuring two others in a vehicle. Another person was seriously injured when a wall collapsed in the Fortaleza area.

The authorities have declared a state of emergency for the municipality of Rio Maria in the state of Para in Brazil.

According to the state government, on March 18, 2021, due to heavy rain, the water level in the local river increased by 3.5 meters. On March 18, about 80 mm of precipitation fell in Shinguar in 24 hours. More than 50 mm was recorded near Redensan over the next 24 hours.

Houses along the river were damaged, causing 240 families to flee their homes. Civil Defense works in the area, providing assistance to affected families.

In addition, there was severe flooding in the city of São Luis in the state of Maranhao.
