Etna erupts 11th time in 3 weeks

The largest active volcano in Europe, Mount Etna in Sicily, has been very active over the past three weeks. On Wednesday, the volcanic eruption occurred for the eleventh time in less than a month.

An early Wednesday eruption caused rocks and lava to burst into the dark sky and formed a large river of lava that cascaded down the slopes of the volcano. According to local reports, the eruption occurred in the southeastern crater at about 4:30 am.

Locals in Catania and other nearby towns have had to sweep ash from their cars and walkways, but no property damage or injury has been reported from recent eruptions.

Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology says it is impossible to predict when the last round of volcanic activity might end.
