“This is Exactly What We Need,” Doctors Agree. No More Carcinogenic Hot Dogs in Hospitals. American Medical Association Finally Asks Hospitals to Serve Plant-Based Meals

The Medical Association finally starts thinking about the patients. They ask the hospitals to serve plant based meals to keep the patients healthy. For decades, many people who were in a hospital either as a patient or as a visitor were horrified by the type of food the patients are being served. Even patients who had a heart attack often end up eating hot dogs and bacon, which are not only bad for the heart, but also have been recently shown to be group 1 carcinogens by the World Health Organization (WHO) – meaning that there is the most amount of evidence to their toxicity.
This is all about to change, however.
The American Medical Association just had their Annual House of Delegates meeting, where all the new policy-making takes place, and they passed a long-awaited resolution.
After years of pressure from the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), fighting for the health of the patients, plant-based meals will be finally served in hospitals.
Dr. Neal Barnard, the president of the PCRM, and the author of multiple books including “Dr. Neal Barnard’s Program for Reversing Diabetes” reported what the new policy means:
Hospitals have to serve and promote vegan food as a healthy option.
Processed meats like hot dogs, bacon, and ham will no longer be used.
Dr. Barnard said this change was prompted by the recent 2015 acknowledgement by WHO that processed meats cause cancer, “no debate about it,” as he added.
He said that the doctors who were at the AMA meeting all supported this policy, saying: “This is exactly what we need.” Not one spoke against it.
Meanwhile, the only people who argue against the change fiercely are some of the patients. But as Dr. Barnard reminded his audience, some patients firmly fought against quitting tobacco, when it was first declared cancer-causing.
“Everybody knows that they shouldn’t be eating these meats. Plus they are terrible for the environment, terrible for animals, terrible in every way. The best thing we can do is to say ‘Can’t have them here. You’re in a hospital; this is teachable moment. We’re going to grab a hold of it. We know you want to change your diet; now we are going to help you to do it,” Dr. Barnard said.
The second resolution that came out of the meeting was about Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), also known as food stamps.
“Instead of poisoning people with junk food…that puts economically disadvantaged people at higher risk of diabetes than wealthier people …the federal government needs to start working with this program to get the junk out, and the healthier foods in.”
Dr. Barnard encourages everyone to keep fighting for their beliefs, and for a more health-conscious world, by using these new policies as seeing the change finally coming:
“For all those people who say ‘no, the establishment…these people are never going to change’ – things are changing now. And there are a lot of doctors who are saying… ‘let’s get the healthy foods out there.’ And that means getting the animals off the plate, getting healthier food front and center.”
