Underwater supervolcano can cause a 30-meter tsunami in the area of Naples.

Italian scientists modeled the effects of the eruption of the underwater supervolcano Campi Flegrei and the impact of the giant wave it caused on the coast of Pozzuoli, Sorrento and Naples. They recommend that this situation be included in the National Emergency Plan of Italy, which had previously considered the procedure only for ground-based eruptions.

Studies have shown that the volcano accumulates energy and conditions favorable for an eruption. The result of the explosion will be a “crater-like cavity on the surface of the water”, in the center of which a giant column of water will appear. When it collapses, it will produce a second wave more than 30 meters high, which in 15 minutes will overcome the Gulf of Naples.

“We are talking about one of the most densely populated areas on Earth — the coastal areas of Pozzuoli Bay with dense infrastructure, including houses, a railway network, restaurants, historic buildings, etc.,” said Italian scientists.

Recall that the area has long been known for its volcanic activity. Ancient Pozzuoli, inhabited by Greeks and Romans, now lies under water, is explored by marine archaeologists and is a tourist object. It is also called the “underwater Pompeii”. In 1970 and 1983, the old city center suddenly rose, and then began to descend, forcing to evacuate 10 thousand inhabitants. According to the scientists, the superintendency of the Volcanoes of the Flegrei fields about 40 thousand years ago could cause the onset of “volcanic winter” and the extinction of Neanderthals.
