Hurricane “Michael” in the Gulf of Mexico intensified to the fourth category

Hurricane “Michael” in the Gulf of Mexico has intensified to a dangerous fourth category and is moving to the US coast, the National Hurricane Center, the US National Hurricane Center, said.

Currently, the hurricane is located 275 kilometers south-west of the US city of Apalachicola (Florida) and is moving northwards at a speed of 19 kilometers per hour. Now the maximum wind speed is 209 kilometers per hour. Florida residents are warned of stormy winds, heavy rains and possible flooding.

The name of the tropical storm is assigned when the speed of the wind accompanying it reaches 62 km / h. To hurricane was assigned the first category on the Saffir-Simpson scale, assessing the potential damage from the elements, its wind speed must exceed 120 km / h.

If the wind speed exceeds 150 km / h, then the category of the hurricane will be increased to the second, at 180 – to the third, at 210 – to the fourth. The fifth, the most “dangerous” category, is assigned to hurricanes with a wind speed of more than 250 km / h.
