Forest fires in Portugal

More than 20 fires are raging now in Portugal, only five of them are at the stage of extinguishing.

Over 1,300 fire fighters, 14 helicopters and airplanes take part in the extinguishment, ground equipment. The most difficult situation was in the municipality of Monchique. Due to a fire in the area, more than 100 local residents were evacuated. Nearly 800 firefighters, about a dozen amphibious aircraft and helicopters, are engaged in the fire extinguishing. As a result of the fires, there are wounded people – six were injured in the fire in São Bento do Cortis (the district in the municipality of Estremoz in the district of Evora), two of them were in serious condition delivered to the hospital in Lisbon, the rest to the hospital of Evora. More than 100 servicemen are involved in the fight against fire.

The “red level” of the danger due to heat remains in 11 districts of Portugal, in seven of them a storm warning has been announced.

On Sunday, in some areas of Portugal, the temperature will reach 45 degrees, on the eve of the record was recorded – 46.8 degrees in Alvega (District of Santarem), located in the Central region. The absolute record in the history of meteorological observations was established in 2003 in the village of Amarereja (Beja district) – 47.3 degrees. In Lisbon, 44 degrees was recorded on Saturday, which is higher than the record 43 degrees recorded in the city in 1981.
