Scientists have created a hologram of a black hole

Under certain conditions, under the influence of a magnetic field, graphene scales turn into a quantum hologram of a black hole.

The authors of the study, which is published in the journal Physical Review Letters, argue that in a magnetic field, electrons in a graphene flake of irregular shape create the so-called model SYK (Sachdeva-Ye-Kitayeva). This phenomenon is an example of “holographic duality,” in which a high-dimensional system can be interpreted as a low-dimensional one. The first in this example is a black hole, and in the role of the second electrons are graphene.

This effect is very important for theoretical studies. In a conventional physical laboratory, it is possible to investigate certain properties of a black hole-for example, the propagation of quantum chaos. It is quite simple to create a hologram – it is only necessary that the graphene particle has a clean surface and uneven edges.

Scientists hope that their research will be the beginning of a new direction of science – physics SYK. Working with graphene particles will help physicists better understand the relationship between gravity and quantum mechanics, and also build a more accurate model of black holes.
