Why is coffee good for the heart?

Strangely enough, but coffee has a beneficial effect on a person. It protects against type 2 diabetes, heart disease and heart attack. But earlier it was not known why this was happening. Now we know what the physiological reason for the beneficial effects of this drink.

A new study shows that caffeine helps the movement of the regulatory protein in the mitochondria, strengthening their functions and protecting the cardiovascular cells from damage. An article about this is published in the journal PLOS Biology, and judging from the data given, the caffeine concentration obtained from four cups of coffee is sufficient for a physiologically relevant effect.

The authors of the study showed that the p27 protein, a cell cycle inhibitor, protects heart muscle cells from death, and also triggers the conversion of fibroblasts into cells containing contractile fibers – all of this is important for cardiac reconstruction after myocardial infarction. After that, the scientists found out that caffeine accelerates the movement of p27 to the mitochondria, triggering a chain of reactions beneficial to the heart, and all this can be achieved by drinking just four cups of coffee. Moreover, it protected the heart in mice with obesity, as well as in older mice.

These results can lead to more thoughtful strategies to protect the heart muscle from damage, as well as to include coffee in the diet of the elderly. Moreover, the enhancement of mitochondrial p27 can not only have a potential therapeutic effect in cardiovascular disease, but also increase life expectancy.
