Over 2 million children in the Democratic Republic of the
Congo (DRC) are on the brink of starvation, said Jens Lerke, spokesman
for the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Humanitarian
Affairs (OCHA).
“At the moment in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, over 2 million children are on the verge of starving to death if they do not receive the necessary assistance, this assessment comes from the general UN humanitarian team on the ground,” he said.
Lerke said that on Sunday the humanitarian coordinator of the United Nations, Mark Lawkok, will leave for the first time in the DRC on a new visit. He is going to assess the situation for temporarily displaced people in the country.
The visit will be held on March 11-13. Loukok, in particular, will visit the region of Lake Tanganyika, where the most people are resettled. A total of 4.5 million people were forced to leave their homes throughout the country.
