According to the Baikal branch of the United Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences, earthquakes occurred near the Severomuisk railway tunnel of the Baikal-Amur Mainline.
According to seismologists, the first underground thrust was recorded on Sunday at 6:54 Irkutsk time on the border with Buryatia. The energy class is 10.5, the magnitude according to the formula for the Baikal region is 3.6.
The next earthquake occurred on Sunday at 22:42 on the territory of the North Baikal region of Buryatia. The energy class is 9.8, the magnitude is 3.2.
The third seismic shock was recorded on Monday at 5:35 on the border of the North Baikal and Muya regions of Buryatia. The energy class is 10.9, the magnitude is 3.8.
The Severomuisk tunnel on the Baikal-Amur Mainline (BAM) was opened on December 5, 2003. This is the longest railway tunnel in Russia. It passes through the North-Muya Ridge, its length is 15.3 km.
In January 2015, an outbreak of seismic activity was recorded in the North Baikal and Muya districts of Buryatia. Then within a month in the area of the Severomuisk tunnel there were about 150 perceptible tremors in the energy class 9.6-13.3.
Scientists called this “swarm of earthquakes”, believing that it is an alternative to one powerful tremor.
Since the beginning of the year, around the Severomuisk tunnel, five tremors have been recorded.
