Few ancient buildings caused as much controversy as the Great Sphinx in the Giza Valley in Egypt. Scientists, archaeologists and historians for a long time discussed his age, purpose of construction, original appearance, and the mysterious Egyptian sculpture raised more questions than answers.
In addition to all unsolved puzzles, there is also a controversial theory that suggests that the Sphinx once had a twin. If so, what happened to the second Sphinx in Egypt? Was it and how was it destroyed?
The theory that the Great Sphinx of Giza, perhaps not one, was put forward by historians Jerry Cannon and Malcolm Hatton. Working with the Egyptologist Bassam El-Shammah, Cannon and Hatton are convinced that once there was a second Sphinx, and they think that they have evidence that can prove its existence.
The second Sphinx was a woman, and the statue disappeared under unexplained circumstances. Cannon argues, however, that he managed to find the track of the lost statue, analyzing the structures in the area around the pyramids.
The second Sphinx was on the second mound next to the male sphinx, standing guard in front of one of the Great Pyramids. This means that the statues had to be carved when the terrain had a much warmer and more fertile climate. In ancient times, several thousand years ago, this vast territory was fertile meadows.
Today, there is ample evidence that the Sahara desert was once a pasture ecosystem and was a much more humid place than today. At that time, the Great Sphinx and its companion were to be built.
“The Sphinx was cut out when there was no sand. You can not cut a stone when it is under sand. When it was not under the sand, it was about 12,000 years ago, and the Egyptians were not there, “Cannon said.
Another evidence that speaks in favor of the second Sphinx is the Stella of Sleep or the Stela of the Sphinx created in the time of Pharaoh Thutmose IV. Two sphinxes are clearly depicted on this stella.
El Shammaya explored images made by NASA’s Endeavor companion. In his opinion, the great Sphinx has an underground anomaly, and he thinks that these are the remains of a twin.
The fact that the second Sphinx destroyed is unknown, but El Shammaya suggested that this could be a lightning.
Most Egyptologists are not interested in studying the theory of the two sphinxes.
Cannon and Hatton have a lot of those who support their sphinx theory, but among the Egyptologists there is also a lot of opposition who think that the idea is contrived.
In 2003, they were able to contact Zahi Hawass, an Egyptian archaeologist, Egyptologist and former State Minister for Antiquities, and asked him to confirm his assumptions.
According to Cannon, Haass’s answer was simple and negative. Hawass said that he had no intention of collaborating with Cannon, since he only worked and helped serious, respectable institutions.

The theory that there was a second Sphinx in Giza is not that unusual at all. Archaeological discoveries indicate that the sphinxes are always built in pairs. Without an open approach, we can never solve the riddle of the double sphinx. At the present time, the possible existence of the second unknown sphinx remains an unresolved ancient mystery.
We tend to associate the Sphinx with Egypt, but this intriguing creature was well known in many other ancient places. Ancient civilizations considered the Sphinx the keeper of knowledge and a symbol of mysteries and intrigues.
